Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong

Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.

The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.

All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.

Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.

On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story

JOSEPH ALBERT BOYER - Peacefully after a lengthy illness, on July 27, 1984, at the Health Sciences Centre, Joseph Albert Boyer, aged 80 years. He leaves to mourn three sons, Leo and wife Denise of St. Laurent, Rene and wife Juliette of Winnipeg and Herbert and wife Claudette of St. Eustache; five daughters, Armande Combot and husband Armand of St. Laurent, Aline McMahon of Toronto, Ont., Norma McKinley and husband Eddy of Winnipeg, Yvette Carriere and husband Denis of Woodlands and Jeannine Gaudry of Winnipeg; one sister Josephine Coutu and one brother Etienne and wife Stella of Winnipeg; 28 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Albert, son of the late magistrate Elzear Boyer and Marie Anne Delaronde. He was born August 05, 1903, raised in St. Laurent as a farmer and fisherman, then later employed by Boivin Road Construction in Manitoba. In April 1940, he voluntarily joined Winnipeg Rifles and trained in Portage la Prairie, Man. In July 1940 he was transferred to the Grenadiers. In November 1940 he left for Hong Kong where he was captured on December 25 and held prisoner in the Second World War from 1940 to November 1945. Prayers will be said at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 31 at the Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook St. at William. Mass of the Resurrection will be said at 1:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 01, 1984 at the St. Laurent Roman Catholic Church. Interment to follow at the St. Laurent Cemetery. Pallbearers are his grandsons, Gerald Boyer, Roland Boyer, Clem Boyer, Yves Combot, Dennis Carriere Jr. and Perry Gaudry. Honorary pallbearers are the St. Laurent Legion Members, Louis George Coutu, Wilfred Chaboyer, Eugene Desjarlais, Frank Bruce and James Day. The family wish to express their sincere thanks to the doctors and staff at the S.I.C.U. ward at the Health Sciences Centre. Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook St. in care of arrangements, 774-7474.

  3. Some birthdates and deathdates display as follows: 1918-00-00. In general, this indicates that we know the year but not the month or day.
