Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Albert was born in St. Boniface Manitoba. He was my biological father and I did not know him. Remembrance Day had me wanting to search and your website gave me a lot of good information. I found a Winnipeg Free Press POW list with his name and it seems he had a wife at the time. Her name was J.E Fontaine with a Winnipeg address. But I have reached a dead end so far. He was with my mother Margery Knoblauch in early 1960. I was born June 1962 and my sister Susan Sept 1963. I also found he was a construction worker and a cat operator. I recall when I was 6 that a sheriff came to our house to inform my mother of his passing. We do not know what his middle name is. It has been very interesting to discover all of this and it is greatly appreciated that those who served are not forgotten because of all the work you do.
