Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story
MARCIEN LAFORTUNE - Suddenly on October 11, 1982 at his residence, Marcien Lafortune, aged 69 years, beloved husband of Juliette of 581 Gillespie St., Dugald, Man. Mr. Lafortune was born in Woodridge, Man. He had served during the Second World War with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in Jamaica from 1939 to 1941 and in the Battle of Hong Kong and as a prisoner of war from 1941 to 1945. He was a member of the Hong Kong Veterans Association, the St. Vital Legion, the Metis Union Nationale, ;the Ida Carriere Centre. Besides his wife Juliette, Marcien leaves to mourn his passing his two sons, Marcel and wife Lorraine of Transcona and Peter and wife Sharon of Winnipeg; his two daughters, Linda and husband John Sloan and Juliet MacDougall, all of Winnipeg; his seven grandchildren, Gerry, Charmaine, Tina, Susanne, Joey, Linda and Bridget; his great-grandson Gordon; his brother Edward Lafortune of St. Boniface; his sisters, Mrs. Irene Clifford, Ms. Bertha Lafortune, Mrs. Margaret Petit, Mrs. Yvonne Brodie, Mrs. Georgette Forbes, Mrs. Terri Sutherland, Mrs. Ida Appelman, Mrs. Anita Balzer and Mrs. Jeanette Cormier; his nephew Guy Phllllppot and wife Lorraine and many other nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Cecile, brothers, Hubert and Joseph. A funeral service will be held Thursday, October 14 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Emile Roman Catholic Church, 556 Ste. Anne's Rd., St. Vital with Rev. Fr. R. Peeters officiating. Cremation to follow. The honorary pallbearers will be members of the Hong Kong Veterans Association. The active pallbearers will be Joshi Taille, Frank Appelman, George Forbes, Art, Dave and Joe Dupis. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Manitoba Heart Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg or the Lung Association.
